Vollenda
Germinal's Vollenda Stubble Turnip is a fast-establishing, high-energy forage crop that provides a cost-effective feeding solution for sheep and cattle from summer right through to January. Whether used as a main crop or a catch crop to fill summer grazing shortfalls, Vollenda delivers clean, nutritious grazing with minimal fuss.
- High energy and protein – excellent nutritional value to support stock condition and performance
- Suitable for cattle and sheep – versatile across a range of livestock enterprises
- Easy establishment and quick growth – fast to drill and establish, even in challenging conditions
- Good clean grazing for lambs – ideal for store lamb finishing and clean grazing systems
- Flexible use – works as a main crop or a catch crop during summer grazing gaps
- Extended grazing window – feed from July through to the following January
Barkart
Barkart is a high dry matter stubble turnip variety with excellent winter hardiness and high digestibility. It produces large, purple tankard-shaped roots that are highly palatable to both sheep and cattle, making it a proven and reliable choice for winter forage.
- High dry matter content – ideal for extending the grazing season into winter
- Good winter hardiness – reliable performance in colder conditions
- Highly digestible – supports stock health and performance through the winter months
- Large purple tankard-shaped roots – palatable to both sheep and cattle
- Proven and reliable variety – trusted by UK farmers for consistent results
Sowing Information
- Sowing rate: 2–3 kg per acre (5–7.5 kg/ha); increase to 3 kg/acre (7.5 kg/ha) when broadcasting
- Sowing time: May to late August
- Sowing depth: 15 mm (½ inch), or broadcast onto the surface
- Seedbed preparation: Drill into a fine tilth in moist and warm soil conditions
- Consolidation: Roll before and after drilling for good soil-to-seed contact
Grazing Management
- Introduce stock gradually – limit initial access to 2–3 hours per day to avoid digestive issues
- Strip grazing recommended to maximise utilisation and reduce waste
- Always provide access to dry matter (hay or straw) alongside brassica grazing
- Avoid grazing frosted crops or immediately after heavy rainfall
Suitable For
- Sheep – store lamb finishing, clean grazing, ewe flushing, and outwintering
- Beef cattle – summer and autumn buffer feeding, outwintering
- Dairy – supplementary summer and autumn grazing
Both Vollenda and Barkart are proven stubble turnip varieties trusted by UK farmers for reliable establishment and consistent performance across a wide range of conditions.
