The Gardener’s All-Time Favourite – Sweet, Coreless, and Succulent.

Early Nantes 2 is arguably the most popular carrot variety for home gardeners worldwide. Renowned for its "stump-ended" cylindrical shape and almost coreless interior, it delivers a superior crunch and an exceptionally sweet flavour that modern hybrids struggle to match.

Each pack contains 2000 seeds, providing a high-yielding crop of smooth-skinned, bright orange roots. This variety is incredibly versatile; it can be sown early in the season under glass or cloches for a tender spring treat, or sown later for a reliable summer and autumn harvest. Because it has very little core, the texture is consistently tender from the skin all the way to the centre.

The Standard for Flavour – Crisp Texture and High Sugar Content.

  • Virtually Coreless: Unlike many varieties, Early Nantes 2 has a very small, tender core, making every bite succulent and sweet.

  • Rapid Maturity: One of the fastest-growing open-pollinated varieties, perfect for early sowings.

  • Smooth Skin: The bright orange roots are exceptionally smooth, requiring minimal peeling—just a quick wash and they are ready to eat.

  • Perfect for Kids: The natural sweetness and crunch make this the ideal variety for lunchboxes and raw snacking.

Growing Instructions

  • Variety: Early Nantes 2 (Cylindrical/Stump-rooted)

  • Pack Size: 2000 Seeds

  • Position: Full Sun; prefers light, sandy, stone-free soil.

  • Sow Outdoors: March to July (or February under cover).

  • Sowing Depth: 1cm (0.5in).

  • Spacing: Rows 30cm apart; thin to 5cm (2in) for mature roots.

  • Harvest: June to October (approx. 70-80 days from sowing).

Gardener’s Tip: To ensure the straightest roots, avoid sowing in soil that has been recently manured, as this can cause the carrots to fork. To protect against Carrot Fly, grow your Nantes carrots under a fine insect mesh or sow them alongside onions or leeks, whose strong scent helps mask the aroma of the carrots.
