The Gourmet’s Salad Essential – Lacy, Crisp, and Beautifully Bitter.

Pancalieri (often called Pancalieri a Costa Bianca) is the gold standard for frisée-style endive. Originating from Italy, this variety is prized by chefs and home gardeners for its large, dense heads of finely curled, "lacy" leaves. The outer leaves are a vibrant green, while the heart naturally blanches to a tender, creamy white with delicate rose-tinted midribs.

Each pack contains 750 seeds, offering a generous supply of this gourmet green. Pancalieri is a self-blanching variety, meaning the dense growth of the heart keeps the inner leaves pale and tender, reducing the natural bitterness and creating a perfect crunch. It is more heat-tolerant than many lettuces, making it a reliable performer from spring right through to the autumn.

Why 'Pancalieri' is a garden standout:

  • Exquisite Texture: The lacy, frizzy leaves hold dressings beautifully and add volume to salad bowls.

  • Self-Blanching: Produces a naturally sweet, pale heart without the need for manual tying.

  • Nutrient Dense: A fantastic source of Vitamin K, Vitamin A, Magnesium, and dietary fibre.

  • Extended Harvest: Can be sown from early spring until late summer for a continuous supply.

Growing Instructions

  • Variety: Pancalieri (Fine Curled)

  • Pack Size: 750 Seeds

  • Position: Full Sun / Partial Shade

  • Sow Outdoors: March to September.

  • Sowing Depth: 1.5cm (0.5in).

  • Spacing: 30cm (12in) between plants.

  • Harvest: 10–12 weeks from sowing.

Gardener’s Tip: For the best flavor and texture, keep the plants well-watered during dry spells. Early and late sowings will benefit from the protection of a cloche or polytunnel to maintain their crispness and prevent bolting.
