Lettuce - Lollo Rossa (550 Seeds)

The Italian Classic – Beautifully Frilled, Deep Red Leaves with a Crisp Crunch.

Lollo Rossa is one of the most decorative and popular lettuce varieties for the home gardener. A recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, it is famous for its stunning rosettes of deeply curled, frilly leaves. The foliage transitions from a vibrant pale green at the base to an intense, dark burgundy-red at the edges, making it a spectacular addition to both the vegetable patch and the salad bowl.

Each pack contains approximately 550 seeds, perfect for successional sowing. Lollo Rossa is a "loose leaf" variety, meaning it doesn't form a hard heart. This makes it ideal for "pick-and-come-again" harvesting, allowing you to snip a few leaves at a time while the plant continues to grow. Its unique texture and mild, nutty flavour have made it a staple for gourmet salads and a favourite for professional chefs.

Gourmet Texture & Vibrant Colour – The Perfect "Pick-and-Come-Again" Lettuce.

  • Stunning Visual Appeal: Intensely curled, frilly leaves with deep red edges that add professional flair to home-grown salads.

  • Continuous Harvesting: As a loose-leaf variety, you can harvest individual leaves as needed for weeks of fresh cropping.

  • Award-Winning Performance: An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner, ensuring reliability and excellent garden results.

  • Highly Ornamental: The beautiful red rosettes are pretty enough to be grown in flower borders or patio containers.

Growing Instructions

  • Variety: Lollo Rossa (Loose Leaf)

  • Pack Size: 550 Seeds (approx.)

  • Position: Full Sun or Partial Shade; moisture-retentive, fertile soil.

  • Sow Indoors: February to April (under glass for early crops).

  • Sow Outdoors: April to July (direct into rows).

  • Sowing Depth: 1cm (0.5in).

  • Spacing: Rows 30cm apart; thin seedlings to 20-25cm apart for full rosettes, or leave closer for baby leaf harvesting.

  • Harvest: 10–12 weeks from sowing.

Gardener’s Tip: To maintain the best red colour, ensure the plants receive plenty of sunlight. If you are short on space, Lollo Rossa is an excellent candidate for growing in "mixed leaf" containers or window boxes. Always water in the morning to keep the frilly leaves succulent and crisp.
